Harambee is a Swahili word which means, "bringing together all the resources of a village to make it a better place to live and grow."  It was in this spirit of community that Harambee Community Development Initiative, Inc. (Harambee) was formed in 1994.

Harambee is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with its primary location in East Orange, New Jersey; a future site is being renovated for a satellite location in Newark, NJ. Harambee is an outreach ministry of the Elmwood United Presbyterian Church and the visionary Reverend Robert N. Burkins, Sr. who has served as Senior Pastor since 1987.

All Harambee programs are integrated and synergized to emphasize the importance of economic, educational, and social transformation that directly or even indirectly impact the future for children and youth.
Harambee is currently directly deploying the following initiatives within the Essex County Super-Village.

  1. Music & Video Production Academy (MVPA)
  2. Women’s Empowerment Initiative (WEI)
  3. Harambee Broadcast Network (HBN)
  4. Harambee Family Academy (HFA)

We offer a wide array services that are proactive in nature. We strive to offer solutions to the well documented struggles of many of the working-class and lower-income families who live and work within the Harambee Essex County Super-Village (East Orange, West Orange and Newark, NJ)
